CANTON, NY - The Utica University field hockey team fell to the St. Lawrence University Saints 4-0 on the road on Tuesday evening. 
 
The first quarter was a defensive battle as both sides were only able to attempt one shot each. The Saints were able to break through at the 22:56 mark before scoring once more 23 seconds before halftime for a 2-0 lead at the midway point. 
 
The Pioneers couldn't generate any looks at the cage through the third quarter while St. Lawrence struck again in the 33rd and 37th minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of action. 
 
While Utica's defense held strong through the fourth, its offense was held to one shot attempt yet again as the Saints held on for the non-conference win. 
 
Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) was responsible for both of the Pioneers' shots while she also recorded two defensive saves. Lyla Cushman (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) made two saves in cage as well for the team. On the evening, St. Lawrence out-shot Utica 8-2 including 6-0 on goal. The home team was also called for 55 fouls to the Pioneers' 38. Utica also controlled penalty corners throughout the game, 5-4. 
 
Utica (1-4, 0-1 Empire 8) will return to Empire 8 play at noon on Saturday when the team travels to Washington and Jefferson College.
