UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's soccer team dropped its first home contest of the year after the Oswego State Lakers came away with a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening.
After plenty of attempts through the first 29 minutes of the match,
Cody Baker-Green (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was able to put the Pioneers ahead in the 30th minute. About 20 seconds following a corner kick off the foot of
Brady Barnard (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool),
Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) found Baker-Green for a clean look roughly 25 yards out for his seventh goal of the season. Utica took its 1-0 lead into halftime while out-shooting Oswego 11-4.
However, the Lakers came out resilient in the second half. After two shot attempts through the first five minutes, Oswego evened the score in the 51st minute. While the Pioneers were able to generate more looks through the later minutes of the second, Oswego was able to find the back of the net in the 86th minute for what would be the game-winning tally.
Baker-Green and Mugushu combined for 11 of Utica's 21 shots while
Noah Nassberg (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast ) attempted three of his own. The Lakers also drew 13 corner kicks to the Pioneers' three.
Utica (4-2-1, 1-0-1 Empire 8) will travel to Nazareth College at 3 p.m. on Saturday for an Empire 8 contest against the Golden Flyers.
