UTICA, NY - A pair of
Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) goals and yet another
Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) shutout lifted the No. 13 Utica University women's hockey team to its 12th straight win after defeating the Manhattanville College Valiants at home, 4-0.
The Pioneers scored twice in both the second and third periods. Whitney led the team with two goals, one coming in the second period and another coming on a third period power play.
Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) and
Madison Novotny (Wesley Chapel, FL/Northwood School) each had a goal in the win as well.
In goal, Hawthorne finished off her fifth shutout of the year after a 25 save performance.
The sides fared even throughout the first period as the Valiants fired off 10 shots to the Pioneers' eight. However, neither team could muster up a goal over the first 20 minutes as the game entered the second period even at zero.
Roughly 7:30 into the second, Santullo put the team ahead with her 11th goal of the season.
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) and Carly Stefananini assisted on the tally.
Six minutes later, Whitney extended Utica's lead thanks to Sloan's second assist of the afternoon. Manhattanville was limited to eight second period shots as the Pioneers went into the third with a 2-0 edge.
Whitney struck again around the 8:30 mark in the third period. On a Pioneers power play,
Madison Novotny (Wesley Chapel, FL/Northwood School) dished the puck over to an open Whitney on the wing who fired it in for her second of the game and a 3-0 lead.
Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) also assisted on the play.
With less than two to play, Novotny wanted a goal of her own as she took the puck half the length of the ice before putting it in for what was the second Utica power play goal of the day as well as the icing on the cake.
Utica was explosive in the third period as a unit, getting off 22 of its 38 total shots in the final 20 minutes of play. The team was also able to fend off Manhattanville for 8:33 of playing shorthanded, including a critical 5-on-3 late in the second period.
No. 13 Utica (13-1-1, 10-0-1 UCHC) and Manhattanville meet again on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the Nexus Center.
