Field Hockey Falls at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Utica University field hockey team fell on the road in non-conference action to the Union College Garnet Chargers, 3-0, on Tuesday evening.
 
Union outshot Utica 22-5 and 12-3 on the evening with its three goals coming in the 11th, 23rd and 35th minutes. Penalty corners were also 18-7 in favor of the Garnet Chargers. 
 
For the Pioneers, Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) had three shots including one on goal while Alanna Fragapane (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had one on goal and Riley Cosimeno (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) one total. In cage, Hannah Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls) Made seven saves and allowed three goals in the losing effort. 
 
At the 10:26 mark in the first, the Garnet Chargers scored their first goal on the team's third shot of the game, coming off the stick of Maddie Greco. The Pioneers had one attempt less than 30 seconds later however, Jedreicich's shot went wide as the quarter eventually came to a close. 
 
Union pushed the attack in the second quarter with 11 total shots, including one of its nine looks on cage that got past Young with just shy of eight minutes left in the half. While she allowed one in, the junior Young held strong throughout the frame, making eight saves to keep the game within reach at 2-0 entering the break. 
 
Less than five minutes into the third, Greco struck again to push Union's lead to 3-0. The Pioneers were held to one shot in the third and two in the fourth, one of which coming on goal (third quarter, Fragapane). Union went on to take the contest, 3-0. 
 
Utica (4-9, 2-2 Empire 8) will return to conference play on Friday when the team takes to the road to face Keuka College at 5 p.m. on Friday.
