Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls at Home to Hartwick

UTICA, NY - The Utica University field hockey team fell at home to the Hartwick College Hawks 2-0 from Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks outshot Utica 15-1 and 10-0 on goal over the course of the game. Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) provided the team's lone shot while her second one that she would have scored on was called back. In goal, Hannah Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls) made six saves and allowed two goals in the losing effort.

Christina Jackson (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) and Madison Ranalli (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) each had one defensive save as well. In doing so, Ranalli broke her own program and Empire 8 single season defensive saves record from last season. The national leader is also two away from setting a new Empire 8 record.

Also in the contest, Hartwick drew 18 penalty corners to Utica's five. Each team was assessed one yellow card while Utica had two green cards and Hartwick had one.

Despite a threatening Hartwick all first half, Young and the Pioneer defense in front of her limited the Hawks to just two shots in the first quarter and four in the second. However, with 48 seconds left in the half Hartwick scored on an unassisted breakaway goal by Danielle Hand for a 1-0 advantage entering halftime.

The Hawks next goal came off a penalty corner about five minutes into the fourth quarter. It was the only corner goal allowed by Utica over Hartwick's 18 total tries. Utica looked to push the pace however, the team couldn't make any damage late in the game as the second place Hawks held on.

Utica (5-10, 3-3 Empire 8) will wrap up its regular season at Elmira College at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The team will then host the Empire 8 First Round on Monday with time and opponent TBD.
