Volleyball Beats Delhi in Non-Conference Match

DELHI, NY - The Utica University volleyball team swept SUNY Delhi on Tuesday night to collect a non-conference win.

Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) led the way with 13 kills while Meghan Brennan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) (6) and Jada Anthony (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) (3) rounded out the team leaders. The trio of Madison Maggiore (Orangeburg, NY/Tappan Zee), Lauren Jones (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), and Hannah Johnson (Murfreesboro, TN/Blackman) continued to be efficient at serving with each recording at least two service aces. Jones led the team with 12 assists while Maggiore (8) and Cassi Wagemann (Diamond Point, NY/Lake George) (2) were the team's leaders.

Anthony continued to be a force down low with three blocks to lead Utica while Cepiel and Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) each added one. Cepiel also led the Pioneers with 12 digs with Brennan and Livya Leider (Homestead, FL/Felix Varela) each tallying seven.

Utica grabbed an early 8-4 lead in set one and increased its edge to 12-5 before Delhi cut the deficit to just three. The Pioneers did not let off the gas and led the rest of the set and won 25-18 to lead 1-0 in the match.

The Pioneers continued to control momentum grabbing a 6-2 advantage in set two and eventually holding a 13-5. Delhi cut into the deficit trailing just 16-13 and kept the rest of the set close with Utica holding on for a 25-22 set two victory and took a 2-0 edge in the match.

The teams exchanged points to begin set three with it being tied 5-5. Delhi held a one-point advantage multiple times and then held a 24-18 edge. However, Utica used some of its late magic to grab eight of the last nine points and steal the set 27-25 and win the match 3-0.

Utica (14-10, 3-3 Empire 8) will continue its road trip and face St. John Fisher University on Friday, October 27 at 7 p.m.
