ONEONTA, NY - The Utica University men's soccer team suffered its first league loss on Wednesday to the Hartwick College Hawks by a score of 3-1.
The two teams each had seven shot attempts over the course of the day while the Pioneers held a 4-3 advantage on goal. The Hawks drew four corner kicks to one by Utica while 19 Hartwick fouls were committed to the Pioneers' 13. Three yellow cards were issued to each team as well.
It took most of the first half, but Utica would be the team to strike first to take a 1-0 lead. In the 41st minute,
Nico Leonard (Long Beach Township, NJ/Southern Regional) gave the team the lead on what was his first career goal. However, Hartwick evened the score at 1-1 thanks to a goal by Thomas Herzog with just nine seconds left in the first.
In the second half, Utica was unable to net any goals as the team was held to just one shot. On the other side, Hartwick would score again in the 52nd and the 70th minutes, both of which coming from Jim Mahoney, to pull away and take the league win.
The Pioneers (3-5-2, 1-1-1 Empire 8) will travel to Rochester, NY to take on St. John Fisher University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
