No. 4 Men's Hockey Cruises Past Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA - The No. 4 Utica University men's hockey team collected its first road victory of the season, defeating the Chatham University Cougars 6-2 on Friday evening. The Pioneers remain undefeated on the year as senior Brian Scoville (Agawam, MA/Alabama-Huntsville (NCAA DI)) led the way, scoring his first two goals of the season.

Along with Scoville's efforts, Austin D'Orazio (Vaughan, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL)), Aiden Hughes (Mississauga, ON/Milton Menace (OJHL)), and Matt Wood (Garnet Valley, PA/Richmond Generals (USPHL)) each collected two points in the matchup. D'Orazio and Hughes notched their first career intercollegiate goals. Drake Morse (Grand Rapids, MI/Shreveport Mudbugs (NAHL)) and Kimball Johnson (Dallas, TX/University of St. Thomas (NCAA DI)) rounded out the six-goal night for the Pioneers. Michael Herrera (Syracuse, NY/Utica Comets (NCDC)), Dante Spagnuolo (Newmarket, ON/Adrian College (NCAA DIII)), Chris Carroll (Islip, NY/New Jersey Titans (NAHL)), Andrew Gullichson, and Jakob Breault (Acton Vale, QC/Alaska-Fairbanks (NCAA DI)) all provided assists in the matchup.

Ethan Roberts (Cary, NC/University of St. Thomas (NCAA DI)) was reliable in goal once again, making 15 saves on a night where Utica outshot Chatham 33-17.

Despite having three penalties and losing the battle on faceoffs, the Pioneers held a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of the first frame. Just a minute into the game, Kimball Johnson (Dallas, TX/University of St. Thomas (NCAA DI)) got the Pioneers on the board for an early lead. Austin D'Orazio (Vaughan, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL)) would later push Utica's lead to two as he would net one just six minutes later. Utica held its own on three penalty kills as Chatham's lone goal of the period came amidst an even strength stretch.

In the second period, Utica closed the door on any hope that Chatham had by piling on three more goals. Brian Scoville (Agawam, MA/Alabama-Huntsville (NCAA DI)) took over in the opening minutes of the period. Utica came out hot just as they did in the first, with Scoville scoring a goal in the opening minute. He wasn't satisfied after this and would rifle another shot past goalie, Thomson Phinney, just three minutes later. Aiden Hughes (Mississauga, ON/Milton Menace (OJHL)) made his mark halfway through the period as he extended the Pioneer lead to 5-1. Matt Wood (Garnet Valley, PA/Richmond Generals (USPHL)) and Austin D'Orazio (Vaughan, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL)) would both collect their second point of the matchup with assists on the goal.

Chatham briefly stopped the bleeding with a goal of their own in the third, but it was too little too late. After the Cougars goal, the Pioneers would control much of the remaining portion of the period. Utica's resilience on faceoffs kept the puck in their possession and allowed Drake Morse (Grand Rapids, MI/Shreveport Mudbugs (NAHL)) to put the cherry on top for Utica's final goal of the night.

Utica (3-0-2, 2-0-1 UCHC) will be back in action Saturday against Chatham at 3 p.m. from Pittsburgh, PA where they look to complete the sweep.
