Men's Lacrosse Falls to Morrisville in Season Opener

MORRISVILLE, NY- The Utica University's men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to SUNY Morrisville 10-6 in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon.

The Mustangs went into halftime with a 9-3 lead. With 14:31 left in the third quarter, Utica scored their fourth goal to put them within five. Morrisville scored one more goal with 9:02 left in the third quarter to close out the game. The Pioneers scored three in the second half to put them within four.

Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) led the way for Utica as he netted two goals and one assist while Nolan Shea (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) made his debut with two goals. Luke Rinaudo-Concessi (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) each had one goal apiece and Jonathan Chilinski (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) dished out two assists. Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) made some big time saves for the Pioneers to keep the Mustangs at bay. Utica won the faceoff battle 10-9 giving the offense extra chances to cash in and get the offense going. Gianpaul Cooper (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the team with four ground balls and played great defense. Both Cooper and Chase Rorick (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) each caused three turnovers apiece.

Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) and Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) each saw time in net. Bowen took over with nine minutes left in the second quarter and recorded 11 saves while only letting in one goal in the second half. With 2:38 left in the second, Bowen made a fantastic save on a man-down opportunity to slow down Morrisville's offense.

The Pioneers (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host SUNY Oneonta for the first time since 2008.
