Baseball Picks up Two More Wins in Sweep of Canton

ONONDAGA, NY - The Utica University baseball team swept the SUNY Canton Kangaroos at Onondaga Community College on Wednesday.

Utica 13, SUNY Canton 12

Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw), John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) and Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led Utica with two hits each while Fasolo, solo home run, and Son, three-run home run, both went deep in the win. Son finished game one with six RBI in all.

On the mound, Kooper Knabe (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) combined for three scoreless innings while Knabe picked up his third win of the season. The freshman faced the minimum over his two innings of work to go with three strikeouts. May also took the mound for a one out save in the 7th.

Canton jumped on the board in the top of the 1st inning with a pair of runs off of starter Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) however, Utica responded big with a seven-run bottom half. The first three batters for the Pioneers reached base before Son tripled everyone home for a 3-2 lead with still no outs. Fasolo followed up with an RBI single to bring Son home before Utica added three more runs, all of which coming with two outs.

James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn) pitched a clean 2nd inning while Utica put one on the board in the bottom half by way of a deep Fasolo homerun that bounced off the right field scoreboard.

The Roos went on to even the game at 8-8 with a six-run top of the 3rd before Utica quickly regained the lead in the home half. With the bases loaded and one gone, Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Lance Berger (Lindenhurst, NY/Saint Anthony's) from third before Son delivered the big blow. The senior turned on a pitch and lifted it high and deep over the left field fence to put Utica ahead 12-8.

Knabe came on in the 4th in relief and shut down the Canton bats, facing just six batters over his two innings while striking out the side in order in the top of the 5th.

Following a silent bottom of the 5th for Utica, Ford came in to pitch the 6th and retired Canton in order before the Pioneers scored once more in the home half for a 13-8 lead with three outs to go in the game.

Jake Mangino (Sayville, NY/Sayville) came on to finish the game however, the Roos strung together a two-out rally and put up four runs in the blink of an eye. May came in with the tying run on second and stuck out the second batter he faced for the save and the Utica win.

Utica 6, SUNY Canton 2

Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) each led the team with two hits while Fasolo, Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton) topped the Pioneers with two RBI each.

On the mound, Dylan Sullivan (West Orange, NJ/Columbia) picked up his third win over the year after two relief innings allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Derrike Goutremout (Chaumont, NY/Lyme Central) started the game and pitched a scoreless frame while Jack Krug (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Canajoharie) also tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings.

Utica's bats carried over into the early stages of game two. Three batters into the contest, Fasolo doubled home May and Crossley for a quick 2-0 lead while Story later brought home Fasolo on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game.

Krug took the hill in the 2nd for Goutremout and faced one batter over the minimum to escape the top half quickly. Crossley gave Utica another run with a two-out RBI single to push the Pioneer lead to 4-0.

In the 3rd, Krug retired the side in order before Sullivan took over in the 4th with the score still 4-0. He too set down the Canton lineup down in order before Utica scored again in the bottom half.

Up 5-0 entering the 5th, Sullivan shook off a leadoff single with a strikeout before a lineout to May at shortstop turned into a 6-3 putout for a heads-up double play that got Utica out of the inning.

The Roos found the board in the top of the 6th while the Pioneers answered right back in the home half to take a 6-1 lead into the 7th. Although Canton threatened another comeback attempt, Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro) limited the damage with one run allowed as the Pioneers took game two to finish off the sweep.

Utica (8-3, 0-0 Empire 8) will begin league play this weekend against Russell Sage College. The three-game series is currently set to begin with a nine inning game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Gutchess Sports Complex in Cortland, NY.
