Men's Tennis Set For Busy Week, Ready to Begin Empire 8 Stretch

UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's tennis team is set for a busy week with three games. The team travels to face Oswego State on Wednesday, March 29 at 4 p.m. before hosting Nazareth College on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. and then St. John Fisher University on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. to begin a stretch of conference play.

Last Time Out: The team dropped its match to Medaille University 5-4 on Saturday night. Hunter Sanford (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) and Bradley Litz (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) were battling in doubles and ended up winning 8-6 in a terrific game. The duo had quite the run to secure a doubles victory for the Pioneers and the duo's first victory as a pair in the new campaign. Richard Nguyen (Utica, NY/Proctor) and Jack Paute (Utica, NY/Proctor) fought hard in their doubles match yet fell late 8-4. Litz dominated his opponent in singles and won 6-2 and 7-6 to sweep the match. Nguyen and Sanford both fought hard in singles, yet they ultimately fell late. Sanford's singles match was quite the battle as Sanford forced a third game, yet the sophomore ultimately fell in the third set 6-4.

Dynamic Duo: The doubles duo of Hunter Sanford (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) and Bradley Litz (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) started off their season hot after winning their doubles match 8-6 in a terrific game. Both made some fine plays down the stretch and the two brought home Utica's first doubles win of the season.

Veteran Presence: Senior Bradley Litz (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) is off to a fantastic start after winning his doubles match and singles match against Medaille University. Litz dominated his opponent in singles winning the first set 6-2 and then after a hard-fought battle he won the second set 7-6 to sweep the match. Litz looks to keep the momentum going with conference play beginning this weekend.

Scouting Oswego: The Lakers are 3-3 this season and the team had a decisive win over Cairn University 7-2 on Wednesday, March 15. Oswego is led by Anthony Salerno who dominated Cairn winning his singles match 6-2 and 6-4. Ethan Bannochie and Zachary Demott are two more viable options who each also won their singles matches against Cairn and will be facing off against Utica on Wednesday.

Looking at Naz: The Golden Flyers are 3-3 this season and sport a 1-1 conference record after dropping its last match to Houghton 8-1 on Saturday, March 25. In singles the team is led by Nathan Allen who sports a 3-2 record and Max Funiciello who is 2-1 this season in singles. The top duo teams for Nazareth are Dominic Vito and Noah Britton and then the duo of Chris Benedict and Isiah McMurray who are both 1-0 in duos.

Fisher Preview: The Cardinals are 2-2 this season and are coming off back-to-back dominating 9-0 victories over Medaille University and Alfred University this past weekend. Sean Danahy and Jake Anthony lead the charge for Fisher in duos after winning 8-0 while Will Chubb and Zach DeCaro also won 8-0 against Alfred. Danahy is the team's top player winning his singles match 6-0 and 6-1 against the Saxons. Fisher will face RIT on Wednesday, March 29 before squaring off with Utica on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
