ONEONTA, NY - The Utica University baseball team fell on the road to the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons 6-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
Multiple Pioneers had a hit in the game as
Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro),
Nathan Yantz (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia),
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany),
Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional) and
Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) each had one.
Tyler Jennings (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove in the team's lone run via hit by pitch.
Starter
Jack Krug (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Canajoharie) was credited with the loss after two innings of work allowing five runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro) went four scoreless innings in relief allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four.
Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) went one inning allowing one run on two hits while
Dylan Sullivan (West Orange, NJ/Columbia) pitched a clean 8th in just 10 pitches.
Oneonta scored five runs over the 1st and 2nd innings combined, three of which coming in the 1st and a pair in the 2nd for a 5-0 lead after two full.
Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro) came in to pitch for the Pioneers in the top of the 3rd and kept Oneonta at bay with a clean four innings of work.
After being held to three hits and no runs over the first six innings of play, the Pioneers strung together a pair to open up the top of the 7th.
Nathan Yantz (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) singled to open the frame and was sent to third on a double by
Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional).
Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) walked thereafter and
Tyler Jennings (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was hit by a pitch to bring home Yantz for the team's first run of the game.
However, Utica would strand the bases loaded as the team trailed 5-1 entering the bottom half.
The Red Dragons got the run back in the bottom of the 7th while both teams went scoreless in the 8th.
Down to their final three outs, the Pioneers looked to mount a comeback however, the Red Dragons held them to one baserunner in the inning en route to the win.
Utica (10-5, 2-1 Empire 8) will host Houghton University this weekend starting with a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday before a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
