Box Score 2 UTICA, NY - The Utica University softball team was swept by the SUNY Poly Wildcats by scores of 3-2 and 8-5 at Greenman Field on Wednesday evening. Both games were played as Poly's home games.
SUNY Poly 3, Utica 2
Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) (2-4) and
Erica Sanford (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) (2-3) led the team with two hits each as the pair combined for four of Utica's six.
Cassidy Doiron (Beacon Falls, CT/Woodland Regional) and
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) both had one. Doiron's hit resulted in both of the team's runs as well.
In the circle,
Jordyn Conte (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley High School) was handed her first loss of the season following a complete game effort allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while also walking and striking out three apiece.
Utica stranded a runner on third in the top of the 1st to come up empty in the half inning while Conte retired Poly in order during the home half to move the game into the 2nd. The Wildcats scored first an inning later on a double for a 1-0 lead which they would hold until the 5th.
Still trailing 1-0 in the top of the 5th, Doiron stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs. The newcomer turned on a pitch and sent the ball into the right center field gap to score
Kylie Murray (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) and
Abbigayle Finch (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) to grant Utica its first lead of the game.
However, Poly evened the score at 2-2 in the next half inning on an RBI groundout to first as the game eventually moved into the 7th still even at two apiece.
After the Pioneers came away empty in the top half, the Wildcats took advantage in the bottom half and walked the game off on an error to take game one, 3-2.
SUNY Poly 8, Utica 5
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) had a fantastic game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Cassidy Doiron (Beacon Falls, CT/Woodland Regional) had a good showing at the plate also as she went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs driven in.
Maddie Zulager (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) had a pair of hits in the game highlighted by an RBI double.
Maggie Habernig (Kingston, NY/Kingston) lost her first game of the year after going four innings allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Kelly Thornton (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) tossed two innings in relief allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and a strikeout.
The Pioneers were held without a run over the first three innings of play while Poly put up three in the 1st inning and two in the 3rd to lead 5-0 entering the 4th.
Maddie Zulager (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) pushed across the Pioneers' first run of the game with an RBI double in the top of the 4th. Habernig retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning as Utica still trailed 5-1 going into the 5th.
The Wildcats tacked on two more in the bottom of the 5th to extend their lead to 7-1. In the top of the 6th, Doiron belted her first career home run to cut Utica's deficit to 7-3. Poly tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half to enter the 7th ahead 8-3.
Looking to make a comeback,
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) sent her second home run of the season over the left center field wall to bring the Pioneers within three. However, the Wildcats managed to keep Utica off the board the rest of the frame to complete the sweep.
Utica (8-4, 0-0 Empire 8) will travel to Schenectady, NY on Saturday for a pair of games at Union College. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
