UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, 22-3, in its Empire 8 opener on Saturday.
Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Roundout Valley),
Nolan Shea (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) and
Jonathan Chilinski (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) each recorded goals in the game. In goal for Utica,
Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) was credited with the loss after allowing 16 goals and making 13 saves over 45 minutes of play.
Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) allowed five goals and made a pair of saves in 11 minutes while
Owen Mix (Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) had one goal allowed and one save in 3:30 between the pipes.
The Golden Flyers got out to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter before the Pioneers got on the board in the start of the second by way of a Serrano goal assisted by
Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park).
Nazareth ended the second on a 5-0 run before scoring again early in the third quarter to jump ahead 14-1. Shea scored for Utica around the nine-minute mark of the third quarter while Nazareth went on to rattle off six in a row between the end of the third and midway through the fourth to lead 20-2.
Chillinski scored for the Pioneers with 8:06 left in the game while the Golden Flyers netted two more thereafter to spoil Utica's E8 opener.
Utica (4-7, 0-1 Empire 8) will remain home to host Russell Sage College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
