UTICA, NY - The Utica University baseball team topped crosstown rivals SUNY Poly 16-3 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers offense was red hot with 16 runs and 16 hits.
Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led the way with a career-high six RBI and recorded an inside the park home run and towering grand slam all in Utica's eight run 8th inning where 12 batters came to the plate.
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) and
Jack Bono (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler) each tallied two hits and two RBIs.
Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) and
Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had two hits and one RBI.
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) recorded one RBI while
Micah Fiorello (Brooktondale, NY/Ithaca) recorded his first hit of his Pioneer career with a single to right field to score one.
On the mound,
Jack Krug (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Canajoharie) was stellar, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs on two hits to pick up his first win of the season. Krug also recorded five strikeouts and was mixing up his pitches all afternoon.
Jake Mangino (Sayville, NY/Sayville) pitched a flawless 7th inning with two strikeouts.
Dylan Sullivan (West Orange, NJ/Columbia) allowed one run in the 8th yet worked around the jam and
Aidan McCue (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) pitched a clean 9th inning allowing no hits.
Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) got the party started early as he doubled in the 1st inning to score
Steve Sclafani (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale) and give Utica a 1-0 edge. The Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the third as Bono brought home two more runs to increase the lead to 5-0.
A pair of errors led to two more Pioneer runs in the 4th to increase the lead to 7-0. Poly scratched across two runs in the 6th to make it a 7-2 game, yet Krug worked out of the jam to limit the damage.
The Pioneers finished their day with an explosive 8th inning where 12 batters came to the plate and eight runs came across the board highlighted by Fasolo' two home run inning and
John Son's (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) back-to-back homer following Faslo's first home run of the inning.
Utica (16-8, 7-2 Empire 8) will stay home and host Elmira in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
