Softball Drops Two to RPI

UTICA, NY - The Utica University softball team was swept by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Wednesday by scores of 10-0 (6 Inn.) in game one and 10-5 in game two.

RPI 10, Utica 0 (6 Inn.)
RPI tossed a combined no-hitter in the game as Utica's lone base runners were Abigail Sacks (Colonie, NY/Colonie), who reached on an error in the 2nd, Bailey McElwain (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker High School), who reached on an error in the 6th, and Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls), who reached on a fielder's choice in the 6th.

Jordyn Conte (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley High School) was credited with the loss after going 5.1 innings allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on eight hits. She also struck out three batters while walking two.

The Engineers held just a 3-0 lead entering the 6th inning but managed to touch home seven times in the top half to pull away by 10 runs. The Pioneers ultimately fell after six frames via run rule.

RPI 10, Utica 5
Maddie Zulager (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) led the offense in a 3-for-4 effort that included two doubles and three runs driven in. Four other Pioneers finished with one hit in the game while Abigail Sacks (Colonie, NY/Colonie) and Cassidy Doiron (Beacon Falls, CT/Woodland Regional) each had an RBI.

Kylie Murray (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) was credited with the loss after her six innings of work allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Maggie Habernig (Kingston, NY/Kingston) completed the final inning in which she allowed three runs on four hits.

RPI put up three runs in the 2nd frame while the Pioneers were kept off the board until the 5th. Doiron made it a 3-1 game on a double to right field which brought home Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls)

However, the Engineers would put together another big inning, this time in the 7th. Seven runs came across for the visiting team to enter the final half inning of play up 10-1.

Utica refused to go down without a fight. With the bases loaded and two outs, Zulager cleared the base paths and sent all the runners home on a towering double to right field. Sacks stepped up next and singled home Zulager on a base knock to center. However, RPI would go on to close the game two batters later and complete the two-game sweep.

Utica (14-8, 3-1 Empire 8) will remain home and return to Empire 8 action on Saturday when the team welcomes Nazareth College to Greenman Field. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
