CLINTON, NY - The Utica University baseball team was defeated by the Hamilton College Continentals, 16-0, in the annual Jackie Robinson Game on Tuesday evening.
Weather put an end to the contest in the bottom of the 8th frame.
The game, which is sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Frontiersmen, began in 1987 on the 40th anniversary of Robinson breaking major league baseball's color line.
Utica was limited to three hits in the game which came on
Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and
Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton) doubles and a
Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) base hit.
Derrike Goutremout (Chaumont, NY/Lyme Central) was credited with the loss after going two innings allowing four runs.
Jack Krug (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Canajoharie),
Chris D'Agostino (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse),
Nicholas Greene (Rome, NY/Central Valley Academy) and
Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) combined for five innings of relief allowing 12 runs, 11 earned, on 11 hits.
Christian Cicchetti (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) took the mound in the 8th and walked the leadoff batter before the game was suspended.
The Pioneers were held with one hit through the first three innings of play while Hamilton jumped out to a 5-0 lead on six hits after three full frames. Utica had an opportunity to score in the 1st however, Crossley would wind up stranded at third base following a leadoff double to open the game.
Hamilton's bats remained in full force throughout the final four innings of play as the team crossed home twice in the 4th, four times in the 5th, once in the 6th and four more times in the 7th.
Utica had another scoring chance in the top of the 7th with the bases loaded and two outs but would again come up empty.
Utica (19-9, 10-2 Empire 8) will host Medaille University for a three-game series this weekend. The sides will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday, which will also be Utica's Senior Day, starting at 1 p.m.
