Baseball Sweeps Medaille, May Sets All-Time Program Saves Record

UTICA, NY - The Utica University baseball team secured yet another Empire 8 series sweep, this time doing so over the Medaille University Mavericks following its 10-6 win on Saturday.

Antonio Martinez (Sunrise, FL/Western) powered the offense in a 3-for-4 outing that included a triple and two RBIs. Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) had two-hit games as well, Son doing so with a team-high three RBIs. Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) knocked in a pair of runs in the win too.

On the hill, James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn) earned his fourth win of the year. The southpaw went six innings allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while totaling six strikeouts. Derrike Goutremout (Chaumont, NY/Lyme Central) tossed 1.2 innings while Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) pitched the final 1.1 frames while picking up his third save of the year. The save also made him the all-time program leader with the seventh of his Pioneer career.

James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn) set the side in order in just seven pitches in the top of the 1st while Utica went on to jump on the board in the bottom. Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) reached base to start the game and were both brought home on an error by the second baseman two batters later. Utica maintained its 2-0 lead going into the top of the 2nd.

There, the Mavericks found the board for their first time in the game. After the team's first two batters reached base, a one-out fielder's choice allowed the runner from third to come home. Roeschalub maneuvered through to get out with minimal damage allowed.

Later in the 3rd, the Pioneers would add three insurance runs for Roeschlaub. Antonio Martinez (Sunrise, FL/Western) opened the frame with a triple to the right center field gap and came home on a Texas League double by Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro). Crossley then touched home on a John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) triple down the right field line before coming across on a Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) sacrifice fly. Entering the 4th, Utica was ahead 5-1.

Medaille would go on to score twice in the top of the 6th to close its deficit to just two runs in a 5-3 game. However, the Pioneers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half. Nathan Yantz (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) walked one in while Martinez brought home a pair on a single.

The Mavericks would not shy away though as two innings later the team got within two runs in what was now an 8-6 game. May, who came on for Goutremout with two outs in the 8th, finished off his opposition though to keep the team ahead.

Utica added a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the 8th by way of a two-RBI Son single. May made quick work of Medaille in the 9th for the all-time saves record, as well as Utica's 22nd win of the season.

Utica (22-9, 13-2 Empire 8) will return to non-conference action on April 25 at SUNY Cobleskill. First pitch against the Fighting Tigers is set for 4 p.m.
