ALFRED, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team fell 18-7 to the Alfred University Saxons in its season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) had a fantastic game as he totaled the first two goals of his career while also causing three turnovers and collecting three ground balls.
Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Roundout Valley),
John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon),
Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Roundout Valley),
Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) and
Alec Valenti (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) also scored in the game. Costanza totaled a team high two assists as well. In goal,
Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) made three saves in the losing effort while
Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) came in for the final 40 minutes of play and recorded seven saves.
The Saxons got off to a big start with a six goal first quarter to Utica's two. Early on, the Pioneers had the score even 1-1 following Brown's first career goal before the Saxons netted four in a row.
The second quarter featured more of the same as the first with Alfred scoring seven times to the Pioneers' two. Utica would trail 13-4 at halftime.
Utica's defense settled in come the second half, allowing just one Saxon goal. Spoto also scored for the Pioneers. Looking to make a large comeback, Utica was outscored by Alfred 4-2 in the fourth quarter as the game came to a close.
Utica finishes its 2023 campaign 7-10 overall with a 3-4 mark in Empire 8 play.
