ROCHESTER, NY - Two members of the Utica University Track and Field program competed in the shot put at the 2023 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by St. John Fisher on Friday. Friday was Utica's second and final day of competition as part of the three-day meet.
After making history as the program's first female thrower to qualify for the NCAA Championships, senior Jane Fahy had another historic day that will forever stand among the top moments in the life of the program.
She placed sixth to become the first thrower at Utica to become an All-American in women's competition. She also became the highest-finishing female athlete at an NCAA outdoor track and field championship in program history, while being the program's first female thrower to compete on the national stage.
On her third and final attempt of the first round, Fahy threw the best shot put mark in the history of the program at Utica, and set a new Empire 8 conference mark as well with a performance of 14.28 meters, which placed second in the opening flight of competition.
That mark convincingly exceeds her previous personal best of 13.84 meters set at the AARTFC meet earlier this month. She met or exceeded that previous personal best on three of her six attempts Friday. The previous Empire 8 record, set by Ithaca's Brandy Smith, had stood since May of 2016.
In his third overall, and second outdoor NCAA Appearance, two-time NCAA All-American Hunter Logan (Fort Plain, NY/Herkimer College) was just eight mere inches away from making his third straight final. The junior opened with two very solid tosses, including his best of a three attempt series at 15.88 meters, but was unable to improve on that mark and earn three additional attempts in the final. Logan placed in thirteenth out of a 22 competitor field. This postseason, Logan was the E8 Champion and placed second at the AARTFC meet.
Today's events concluded the 2022-23 competition schedule for Utica University Athletics.
