UTICA, NY - The Utica University field hockey team dropped a tightly contested 2-0 contest to the St. Lawrence University Saints on Tuesday evening at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) (three) and
Christina Jackson (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (two) combined for the team's five shots on goal and six of Utica's eight overall. In cage,
Hannah Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls) recorded eight saves over the Saints' 11 shots on goal while
Madison Ranalli (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had a defensive save.
St. Lawrence had goals in the 28th and 56th minutes of the game with its first goal coming with just over two minutes to go in the first half. The Pioneers had three looks on goal in the first quarter that came off three of the team's seven total penalty corners in the first frame but couldn't get one to go in.
Over the course of the game, the Saints drew 12 corners to Utica's 10 while neither side converted off of one. From the second quarter on, St. Lawrence outshot the Pioneers 11-4 however, outstanding defensive presence and solid goalkeeping by Young helped limit the damage.
Utica (1-6, 0-0 Empire 8) will host Houghton University at 5 p.m. on Saturday to open Empire 8 play.
