Field Hockey Drops Home Opener to Skidmore

UTICA, NY - The Utica University field hockey team fell in its home opener to the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds 5-1 on Tuesday evening.

The Pioneers were outshot 20-10 overall and 14-6 on goal over the course of the contest. The Thoroughbreds also drew 16 penalty corners to Utica's six. Alanna Fragapane (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) scored the team's lone goal off a rebound as time expired while Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) and Alyssa Pisano (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) combined for the other five shots on goal.

Desirae Baumann (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) made six saves in the losing effort while Hannah Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls) stopped one shot in seven minutes of action.

Skidmore tallied one first and second quarter goal each with its first one coming less than seven minutes into the game on a rebound near the cage. Nearly 3:30 into the second, the Thoroughbreds struck again and would ultimately take its two-goal edge into halftime.

Despite Utica having an early look in the third to come within a goal, Skidmore scored twice more at 33:43 and 36:21 to double its lead to 4-0. Five minutes into the fourth, the Thoroughbreds tallied one more goal before the Pioneers got on the board as time expired. Off a Mix shot on goal, Fragapane collected the rebound and poked the ball in to avoid the shutout.

Utica (0-3, 0-0 Empire 8) will take to the road once again on Saturday to face Morrisville State at 6 p.m.
