Women's Basketball Falls to Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, NY - The Utica University women's basketball team faced off against the Plattsburgh State Cardinals on Saturday afternoon, coming up short with a final score of 67-40.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was Vanessa Hall (Whitesville, NY/Whitesville Central) who led with 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals. McKenzie Simmons (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) added nine points, hitting 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Natalie Cornell (Greenwood, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) notched herself six rebounds.

Plattsburgh opened the game strong, hitting five three-pointers in the first quarter, including a quick three from Payton Couture, setting the tone early and helping the Cardinals pull ahead 22-6. McKenzie Simmons (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) put up Utica's first points with a three-pointer, but the Pioneers struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting 2-for-16 in the quarter.

Utica attempted to close the gap, led by Jaida Larsen's (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) free throws and a fast-break layup from McKenzie Simmons (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook). However, Plattsburgh maintained a double-digit lead with additional threes from Julia Greek and Lauren LaFountain, extending the score to 37-13 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Utica showed resilience, tightening their defense and outscoring Plattsburgh in the paint, with Vanessa Hall (Whitesville, NY/Whitesville Central) and Simmons leading the charge. Despite closing the gap slightly, Plattsburgh's perimeter shooting continued, with Greek knocking down another three-pointer to help maintain the lead, ending the quarter 58-28.

In the final frame, Utica found some late momentum, with Hall and Natalie Cornell (Greenwood, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) grabbing offensive rebounds and second-chance points, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Couture and Imani Walcott contributed additional points for Plattsburgh, sealing their victory.

Utica (0-3, 0-0 Empire 8) travels to Westfield, MA to take on the Westfield State Tournament. Game one of the tournament is set for Friday, November 22 at 5:30pm.
