ROCHESTER, NY - The Utica University men's basketball team defeated the Lehman College Lightning in its season opener in the semifinal round of the Harold J. Brodie Classic, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology, by a score of 67-63.
Three Pioneers finished with double digit points in Hagen Foley (Albany, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) (17pts, 5-12 FG, 1-3 3PT, 6-6 FT), Liam Teague (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) (16pts, 5-13 FG, 2-4 3PT, 4-6 FT), and Damien Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) (11pts, 4-11 FG, 3-4 FT). Call would lead the team in boards, hauling in 11 and both Call and Teague would each record two blocks. Dayion Thompson (Beacon, NY/Kimball Union Academy) would bring in seven points, and lead the team in assists with four, while freshman Jordan Cain (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) would bring in eight points off the bench.
In the opening frame, Utica would jump out to an early four point lead that the Pioneers would grow to seven before Lehman would be able to knot the score at 11. Teague would then drain a three point basket and then fight in the paint for two to bring it back to a two possession lead. The teams would come together again at 20 a side, but it would be Lehman to pull away this time, getting it up to a two possession lead in its favor that the Lightning would hold on to for the remainder of the opening frame, sending the Pioneers into the break down by seven at 39-32.
The second half would see Utica begin to pull away after the break, driving the Pioneer lead to eight on points from Seidina Doukoure (Bronx, NY/The Macduffie School), Thompson, Foley, Teague, Call, and Cain at 49-41. The Lightning would attempt to cut into the deficit, and would be able to bring the score to 49 a side. The Pioneers would be able to pull away again, holding on to a two possession lead for the remainder of the contest, walking away with the win 67-63.
Utica (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) will face the winner of RIT/Fitchburg in the Championship game of the Harold J. Brodie Classic. Tip off from Rochester, NY is set for 3:30.
