Women's Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Bout at Cortland

CORTLAND, NY - The Utica University women's lacrosse team fell on the road to the (RV) SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, 14-5, on Wednesday evening. 
 
Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) notched three of Utica's goals over four shots on goal. Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had one tally on two looks on goal while Kerry Carr (New Hartford, NY/Manhattanville College) recorded her first as a Pioneer. Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had one assist as well along with Samantha DeCondo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro). In goal, Makayla Purdy (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) made six saves over 20 Cortland shots on goal in the losing effort. 
 
The sides combined for seven goals in the first quarter in what was the highest scoring frame of the game. The Red Dragons accounted for six on the scoreboard including four straight to open the game. Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) got Utica on the board with 5:31 to go in the first to cut the team's deficit to three before Cortland put in two more to go into the second up 6-1. 
 
Cortland scored quickly in the second before Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) answered back at the 9:17 mark. The teams went -back-and-forth over the next two with the Red Dragons scoring at 7:19 and Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) for Utica at 5:32 on the advantage. Cortland went on to take a 9-3 lead into halftime thanks to a goal with one second left in the half. 
 
On the advantage again, Carr fired one in for the Pioneers in the early stages of the second half off a Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) assist to come within five goals. However, Cortland came back with back-to-back goals to end the third ahead 11-4. 
 
Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) scored once more for Utica in the fourth before the Red Dragons closed out the contest with three of their own to earn the home non-conference victory. 
 
Utica (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) will remain on the road to take on Oswego State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.
