Baseball Downs Saint Joseph (CT) to Collect First Florida Win

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Utica University baseball team picked up its first win in Florida on Wednesday afternoon with a 19-4 win in seven innings over the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays.

A plethora of Pioneers had multi-hit games including Josh Duval (Utica, NY/Proctor) going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Jack Scanlon (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute), Antonio Martinez (Sunrise, FL/Western) and Jacob Scalise (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) all had three hits with Scanlon driving in four runs and Scalise three. Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional), Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and newcomer Tanner Warren (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) each had two hits while Warren drove in three runs with Salbinski and Fasolo bringing home a pair.

Kody Czternastek (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) made his first start of the year and dazzled over six innings. The sophomore allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and just one walk while striking out five. Kooper Knabe (Cortland, NY/Cortland) shut the door on the game, giving up just one walk and striking out one in the 7th.

The Pioneers clutched up when needed at the plate, going 7-for-10 as a team with two outs and 14-for-24 with runners on base (12-for-19 with runners in scoring position).

Utica jumped on the board early in the game with a 3-0 lead after the top half. With Jack Scanlon (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) and Antoni Martinez aboard and two away, Andrew Salbinski (Essex, CT/Valley Regional) drove the pair home on a single to center for a 2-0 lead. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Salbinski came home on an RBI single by Fasolo to tack on another run.

After getting runners on the corners with no outs in the 1st, the Blue Jays had to settle for one run which came on a ground out back to Czternastek. The sophomore retired the next two to get out of the jam with the Pioneers ahead 3-1 after one full.

A clean 2nd from both sides, as well as a scorless 3rd from Utica, eventually gave way to Saint Joseph tying things up in the bottom of the 3rd on a two-out, two-RBI single to make it 3-3 entering the Pioneers' half of the 4th.

The Pioneers got back into rhythm early in the 4th as a Salbinski single and Fasolo walk set the team up with two runners on and none away. The next batter, Jacob Scalise (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), singled home Salbinski to put the team back up by one.  Utica put up four more runs in the inning thanks to RBI's from Josh Duval (Utica, NY/Proctor), Tanner Warren (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy), and Scanlon to take an 8-3 edge into the home half.

Saint Joseph put one across in the 4th while Utica responded with three of its own in the 5th. Warren drove in another run on a single while Scanlon brought home a pair with a two-out single to go up 11-4.

The team went on to put five runs up in the 6th inning to break the game open to a 12 run lead before scoring three more in the 7th to put the game out of reach and end early via 10-run rule.

Utica (4-7, 0-0 Empire 8) will complete its Florida trip on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against Stockton University from Lake Myrtle Park 5.
