BROCKPORT, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team dropped its non-conference matchup 12-4 against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday evening.
Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) and
Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) led Utica with two points each.
Frey had two goals on two shots on goal while Serrano grabbed one goal and one assist on four shots on goal.
John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) rounded out the scoring with one goal on two shots on goal.
Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) started in the net collecting 16 saves, making multiple great stops throughout the game. He made five in the first half and 11 in the second.
Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) had a dominant day at the face-off X, winning 10 out 15 along with three ground balls. Hogan won eight in the first half and four in the second.
Both teams combined for 22 shots, 12 from Brockport and 10 from Utica. Brockport struck first three minutes into the first quarter, getting out to an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles scored again with 8:10 left in the first, as they would go into the second with a 2-0 advantage.
Utica and Brockport had 10 shots each in the second quarter while Utica won six out of seven face-offs.
Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) notched Utica's first goal with 13:16 left in the second, cutting Brockport's lead to 2-1. Frey now has six points in three out of six games. The Eagles scored five unanswered goals between the 13:03 and 3:48 mark, heading into halftime with a 7-1 lead.
The Pioneers played a great third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 2-1 and picking up six ground balls compared to Brockport's two. Utica's man-down unit made a great defensive stop midway through the third quarter, holding Brockport to one goal in the quarter. With 3:08 left, Serrano found Spoto who scored Utica's second goal, cutting the score to 8-2. Frey found the back of the net again making it an 8-3 Brockport lead with 41 seconds to play in the third. Brockport went into the fourth up 8-3.
Serrano opened the fourth quarter with a snipe from the outside, cutting the lead in half to 8-4. The Eagles responded two minutes later with 9:03 to play, leading 9-4. Brockport would score four consecutive goals as they would go on to win 12-4.
Utica (4-8, 0-3 Empire 8) travels to Russell Sage College for Empire 8 action on Saturday, April 13 at noon.
