WESTFIELD, MA- The Utica University men's track and field team competed at the Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield State in Massachusetts on Saturday, April 13.
Antwan Kelly (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.11m which is now the new school record and secured the win on the afternoon. Also, in the weight throw Justin Swavely (Rome, NY/RFA) placed second (48.98m), and Spencer Borghardt (Melville, NY/St.Anthony's) was third (47.71m).
Including Kelly's first place throw the Pioneers brought home ten event wins across all different events. Hunter Logan (Fort Plain, NY/Herkimer College) took first place in shot put, this time throwing a season-best 15.96m. Billie Mays III (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) was just behind him in second place at 14.10m. The Pioneers had a one-two finish in the pole vault as Jack Rathburn (Clarendon Hills, IL/Westmont) was first (3.80m), and Andrew Weider was second (3.65m). For the third time this season, Kaiden McCaskill (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) took the win in high jump, clearing 1.90m.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Bennett Melita (Johnstown, NY/Fonda Fultonville) took first with a personal best time of 9:28.63. The men's 4x100m relay squad of Matthew Murphy (Remsen, NY/Remsen), Andy Hadasz (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Ethan Kain (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Connor Dean (Taberg, Ny/Camden) took the win, running 43.00. Hadasz also had an individual event win of his own in the 200m, running a 21.94. Dean was also part of the winning 4x400m relay team along with Evan Smith (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker), Tristan Vargo (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park), Andrew Weider with a time of 3:28.03. In the 1500m, Zachary Brown (Milford, NY/Milford Central) ran a personal best 4:15.09 to take first place, and Anthony Leotta (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollows Hills West) took first place in the 5000m, running a personal best 15:43.89.
Utica will next head to Cortland State for the Cortland Classic beginning on Friday, April 19 at 2 p.m. and continuing Saturday, April 20 at 9 a.m.
