UTICA, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team dropped its final game 15-6 against the St. John Fisher Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. The team recognized their ten seniors on Senior Day who compiled over 20 wins in three and a half seasons.
Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley) led Utica with a hat-trick on five shots on goal.
Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and
Lucas Donahue (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) each had one tally while Costanza registered an assist.
Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) collected five caused turnovers and three ground balls, holding the conference's best player to one goal and one assist (Matthew Kemmis).
Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) started in net for Utica, making nine saves.
Jake Bowen (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) played the fourth quarter, making two saves.
Utica's defense made some great stops in the first quarter, limiting Fisher's potent offense to four goals on 10 shots on goal. Oswald made six great saves, keeping Fisher at bay. The Cardinals would head into the second up, 4-0.
It was another great performance by Utica's defense in the second quarter, holding Fisher to one goal on four shots on goal. Team defense was the key to Utica's success, breaking down and forcing their opponents to the alley. Fisher entered halftime with a 5-0 advantage.
The Pioneers and Cardinals combined for eight goals in the third quarter, six from Fisher and two from Utica. Hogan answered back, making a great play after winning possession on the face-off at the 9:15 mark, coming right down the middle and scoring, cutting the lead to 9-1. Fisher would score two goals between the 8:57 and 7:09 mark and with just under three minutes to play, C. Frey stung the corner making it an 11-2 game heading into the fourth quarter.
C. Frey scored two more goals in the fourth quarter followed by Donahue on an unassisted goal. The Cardinals would go on and win 16-5.
