Women's Lacrosse Defeats Poly, Stretches Winning Streak to Nine

UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's lacrosse team claimed its ninth consecutive victory after defeating the SUNY Poly Wildcats, 21-5, on the road on Wednesday evening. The win over Poly moved the Pioneers to 10-0 all-time against their crosstown rivals.

Through rainy and window conditions, the Pioneers cleared the 20-goal mark for the fourth time this season as well as for their third time in the last four games. Alyssa Drell (Mastic, NY/William Floyd) led the way with four scores on four shots while Bella Kolb (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Samantha DeCondo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had three each.

Alyssa Pisano (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) led the team with five points on two goals and three assists. Teammates Jessica Marciano (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili) and Meghan Brennan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) had two each as well. For Brennan, her goals served as the first two of her career.

In all, 11 players recorded at least one goal while 10 different players had at least one assist.

In goal, Makayla Purdy (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) earned her eighth win of the season as she made two saves over 32 minutes of play. Karen Troche (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) made a pair of saves over nearly 17 minutes of action while Angelina Borowiec (Clinton, NY/Clinton) had one save in 11:07 of time between the pipes.

Utica out-shot the Wildcats 36-15 (34-10 on goal) including 20-1 in the first quarter. The team was also a perfect 12-for-12 on clears and controlled 18 of 27 draws with Kerry Carr (New Hartford, NY/Manhattanville College) winning seven and Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) claiming four.

The Pioneers were quick to put their foot on the gas, rattling off 10 goals over the first 5:08 of play. Brennan got the scoring spree started with her first career goal just four seconds into the game off a Kerry Carr (New Hartford, NY/Manhattanville College) assist. Not long after, Kolb, Drell and DeCondo scored three consecutive from 13:34-13:11 to make it 4-0 in the blink of an eye.

The Wildcats stopped Utica scoring streak at 10-0 with their first of the game to make it 10-1 with 8:22 to go in the first. The Pioneers went on to score three more goals over the final 6:48 of the first to lead 13-1 after one.

SUNY Poly scored the first goal of the second quarter with 6:32 to play before Marciano and Carr answered back for Utica to move the game into halftime with the Pioneers up by 13 goals.

Utica continued to control the game in the second half as the team added on six more, four of which coming in the third quarter. Each of the Wildcats' final three goals would come in the fourth quarter while the Pioneers had a pair to make it a 16-goal advantage by the end of the night.
