Saratoga Springs, NY - The Utica University field hockey team found itself amidst a challenging day at the office on Tuesday. The host Skidmore Thoroughbreds took the lead with two late first quarter goals, and doubled their total over the final three quarters as the Pioneers fell by a 4-0 score in a non-conference matchup.
The Pioneers fell to 0-3 in their first road contest of the season, while the hosts out of the Liberty League improved to 2-1.Â
Utica was out-shot 19-2 on the goal frame, with goalkeeper Hannah Young (Jordanville, NY/Little Falls) making a career-high fourteen saves. Young's save total was the most by one Utica goalkeeper in a game since September 29, 2019 when current assistant coach Megan Chamberlain made 26 saves in a 3-0 loss to Colby. Sophomore defender Ryleigh Johnson (Camden, NY/Camden) added a defensive save, her second of the season. The Pioneers got both of their shots on goal by way of graduate midfielder Alyssa Pisano (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington).
Skidmore rode a strong start to establish a permanent lead, with all-conference forward CC Wetter paving the way. Wetter scored the lid-lifter at 10:36, then added a second before the frame was out to put the Thoroughbreds in front. Brooke Tunnicliffe extended the lead to three in the second quarter, and Abby Ezickson opened the fourth quarter with an insurance goal as the hosts secured the win.Â
The Pioneers continue a four-game road trip with a non-conference matchup against Muhlenberg on Saturday, September 14th. The opening hit is slated for 1 PM in Allentown, Pa.
