No. 11 Women's Hockey Took Down the Valiants in UCHC Play, Hawthorne Sets All-Time Save Record

UTICA, NY - The No. 11 Utica University women's hockey team won 7-0 against Manhattanville University in UCHC play on Friday afternoon at the ADK Bank Center. Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) is now the program's all-time leader in saves with 1,844 saves, passing Sarah Detwiler's 1,826 posted from 2001-2004.

Hawthorne notched her 10th win and fifth shutout of the season. She holds the all-time program record in saves, save percentage, wins, goals-against average and shutouts. Hawthorne's consistency over her career has made her one of the top goaltenders in the nation, year in and year out.

Utica was potent on the power play, scoring on three out of five chances. Emma Corbett (Rochester, NY/Adrian College (NCAA DIII)) led Utica with two goals on two shots. Jordan Kowalski (Chicopee, MA/Westfield) was all over the ice, collecting two assists, one goal, four shots and five faceoff wins on nine attempts. Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) tallied one goal and one assist. Kendall Best (Troy, MI/Troy HS / Belle Tire) and Madison Novotny (Wesley Chapel, FL/Northwood School) recorded the Pioneer's other two goals. Best was a force on the faceoff dot, winning nine of 12. Autumn Mish (Long Lake, NY/University of New Hampshire (NCAA DI)) controlled the blueline with her two assists and a plus-three rating.

The Pioneers put a plethora of shots on goal in the first period, totaling 12, most coming in high-danger situations. Only 1:20 into the game, Hawthorne collected her 1,827 save, which is the first all-time in program history. Utica ended the first period with a four-goal lead.

Utica opened the second period with two goals in the first six minutes, both coming within 14 seconds of each other. At the 5:53 mark, Kowalski scored her fifth goal in five games, giving the team a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers scored two more goals in the period from Stefanini and Corbett, taking a commanding 7-0 advantage to the third period.

The Pioneers outshot the Valiants eight to two, letting up minimal space down the middle for the Manttanville offense to operate. No goals were scored in the third period as Utica went on to win in dominant fashion, 7-0.
