Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Accetta Shines and Mugushu Breaks Record in 1-0 Men’s Soccer Win

ONEONTA, NY - Utica University's men's soccer traveled to Oneonta, NY, for a late-night matchup with the Hartwick College Hawks. The teams battled in a tightly contested goalie battle, with Zachary Accetta (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) coming out on top. Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) scored the lone goal, winning Utica the game and breaking the program record for points in a career. The Pioneers climb to 7-3-3 overall this year, with a 4-1-3 Empire 8 record. The Hawks now sit at 4-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Mugushu scored the lone goal of the game unassisted. Felix-Assa Loselose (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) was the only Pioneer with multiple shots on goal, with Mugushu, Joseph Cavallo (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central), Carter Cookinham (Poland, NY/Poland), and Santiago Consalvo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Faulkner University (NAIA)) accounting for the others. Hartwick took a total of 18 shots, with Accetta stopping all eight that were on target. Accetta bounced back big in his first action in a few games, earning the team's second solo shutout of the season. After one combined shutout in the fourth game of the year, Utica has now earned a solo shutout in two of their last three games.

The Hawks were held scoreless in the contest, but had a number of opportunities. Andres Ordonez Acosta and Hunter Bulich led the home squad with their three and two shots on goal. Nick Nowak, Mariano Kool, and Devin Chandler each added one as well. Jelani Usim played in net for the Hawks, saving five of the six shots that came his way.

The lone score in the game came at the 30:52 mark. A Hartwick foul allowed Utica to get further set on offense, with Loselose taking a shot soon before the goal. Usim, the keeper, made the save in the bottom left corner, but Mugushu quickly controlled the ball, sending it home to break the tie. The goal credited Mugushu with his 79th and 80th career points, giving him sole possession of the program record. In addition, he extended his already held game-winning goals record to 11. He sits just two goals from tying the program career goals record as well. Utica's defense held strong after they took the lead, as Hartwick was held to just two shots on goal for the remaining 59:08 of the contest.

Utica will stay at home for three of their next four games, including the next two. Their next game comes on Saturday, October 18th at 1:00 pm when Nazareth comes to Laura M. Casamento Field for an E8 matchup. The squad follows that game up with an out-of-conference game against Hamilton on October 22nd at 7:00 pm.
