Volleyball Sweeps Delhi in Final Non-Conference Matchup

UTICA, NY - The Utica University volleyball team downed the SUNY Delhi Broncos in sweeping fashion, by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was Kendall Turner (Huber Heights, OH/Wayne) who turned in an impressive 14 kill outing while posting a .306 hitting percentage in the contest. Trinity Bailey (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) followed with seven kills, while the trio of Jada Anthony (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South), Lauren Jones (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), and Charley Herrington (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) each finished with four. At the service line, Trinity Bailey (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) registered three service aces while Turner and Megan Wright (Clay Center, KS/Clay Center Community) each chipped in a pair. At the netfront, Anthony and Bailey each tallied three block assists while Arianna Williams (North Chili, NY/Churchvile-Chili) registered a pair. On defense, Wright anchored the back row with a team high 17 digs, while Turner followed with 12.

The opening frame would see the Pioneers come out swinging, taking an early 7-4 lead. The Pioneers would then be able to capitalize on a slew of Delhi errors to take a 12-4 lead in the first set. Delhi would be able to cut the deficit to five, but a massive eight point run by the Pioneers would close out the opening frame by a score of 25-12.

The middle set would see a closely contested battle with Delhi being able to take its first lead of the match at 5-4. Utica would go on a four point run to take back the lead on four straight kills at 8-5. After exchanging blows, the Broncos would be able to cut the deficit to one, before a 7-1 run by the Pioneers would be enough to put Delhi away in the second set by a score of 25-20.

The final frame would be the most closely contested of the match, with both teams coming out of the gate swinging. The Pioneers would grab the edge at 8-6, but a three points run by Delhi would give the Broncos the lead at 9-8. Both teams would trade four point runs late to knot the score at 17 a side, before the Pioneers would be able to pull away with a 5-2 run. A four point run by the Broncos late would send the set into extras, with the Pioneers being able to take the final frame by a score of 28-26.

Utica (10-15, 2-5 Empire 8) returns to action on Friday, October 24 as the team travels to take on the St John Fisher Cardinals. Game time from Rochester, NY is set for 7pm.
