Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 in Matchup with Strong Brockport Team

BROCKPORT, NY - The Utica University men's soccer team continued to wind down on the regular season with a road matchup against SUNY Brockport, the 2nd-ranked team in the Empire 8 standings. Utica entered the game sitting in the 4th seed, laying the groundwork for a big-time playoff implication game. The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first half to secure a lead that would hold despite a later Utica score. The Pioneers fall to 7-5-4 overall, with a 4-2-4 E8 record. Brockport improves to 8-4-3 overall and 7-1-2 in the E8.

Carter Cookinham (Poland, NY/Poland) scored the lone Utica goal, with an assist coming from Mason Bucher (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point). The team had a total of four shots on goal: two by Bucher, Cookinham's goal, and one by Maximilian Pawlowski (Utica, NY/Whitesboro). Zachary Accetta (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) manned the net for the Pioneers, making one save.

Four separate Golden Eagles scored a point in the contest. Max Voyer scored the opening goal of the game, with Brady Reinagel scoring the game-winner. Ryan Mathis tallied an assist on Voyer's goal, with Trevor Lagarde assisting on Reinagel's. Brockport's goaltender was AJ Nelson, who saved three of the four shots that came his way.

Brockport struck twice in the first half, taking control of the game. Voyer scored his goal at the 21:36 mark. Reinagel tacked another on the board almost exactly 10 minutes later to set Brockport up 2-0. The Pioneers struck back at the 76:23 mark with Cookinham's score, but were not able to even the score again.

Utica returns to Laura M. Casamento Field for one more regular-season game on Wednesday, October 29th. The team will play host to Keuka College at 7:00 pm. The Pioneers have already clinched a playoff berth, but have not yet locked in their seed or a home game. In the tournament, the top four teams will all host a lower-seeded opponent in a home game next Saturday, the 1st. Utica entered the Brockport game as the four seed, so they will look to retain their spot with the remaining conference games for all E8 teams.
