Women’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw with Brockport, Kogut Crowned as Ironwoman

UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team battled with an undefeated in conference play SUNY Brockport to a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.

After today's contest, Samantha Kogut (North Adams, MA/Drury) has etched herself in the Pioneer record books by becoming the program's newest Ironwoman, after setting new program records in games played (72), games started (72), as well as building off of her minutes record that she broke earlier this season.

In the contest, six different Pioneers managed to record at least one shot attempt in Kayla Giovingo (Centereach, NY/Centereach), Samantha Kogut (North Adams, MA/Drury), Madison Wagner (Saukville, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels), Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville), Amber Piersma (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham), and Bailey Hewson (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh). Four out of the six Pioneer attempts managed to land on goal. In goal for the Pioneers was Hannah Pcola (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham), who registered four saves in the contest. The Pioneer defense shined, holding a Brockport team that had registered an average of 14.9 shots per game to just seven total attempts, with only four falling on goal.

The Pioneers would register the first shot of the contest, off the foot of Wagner in just the third minute of the contest. Brockport would not be able to get a shot off until the seventh minute that would be corralled by Pcola. The Pioneers would only be able to get one other shot off in the opening frame, off the foot of Kogut that would end up in the hands of the Brockport goalkeeper. Utica would head into the break in the thick of a scoreless tie.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Pioneers would continue to establish their offensive presence early, registering a shot in the 51st minute off the foot of Giovingo after a corner kick that would go out over the crossbar. The Pioneer defense would not allow Brockport to register a shot in the frame until the 77th minute when an attempt off of a Golden Eagle would fall into the arms of Pcola. Both teams would continue to fight for possession for the remainder of the contest, with neither team being able to find the back of the net.

Utica (7-5-5, 4-2-4 Empire 8) returns to action on Wednesday, October 29 as the team travels to take on the Keuka College Wolves. Game time from Keuka Park, NY is set for 4pm.
