Field Hockey Falls 3-2 at Russell Sage to Close Out 25th Anniversary Season

Field Hockey Falls at Russell Sage by 3-2 Final to Finish 25th Anniversary Season.

ALBANY, NY - The Utica University field hockey team traveled East over to Albany on Wednesday night to wrap up their 25th anniversary season with a matchup against the Russell Sage Gators. In the season finale, the Pioneers managed to strike first, scoring in the 37th minute to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Gators would respond with three unanswered scores to snatch a 3-2 victory over the orange and blue.

Utica finished the 2025 campaign with a 4-11 record, also having a 3-7 record in the Empire 8.

The Pioneers were outshot 15-13 in the matchup, as Russell Sage also took a 10-6 edge in the shots on goal department. The Gators also accrued five penalty corners to the Pioneers' three.

Mia Benincasa (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) led the Pioneers on offense in the matchup, scoring a goal and adding an assist to record a solid three-point outing. Benincasa's goal came with under two minutes remaining and gave the Pioneers an opportunity to get back in the contest, although the visitors couldn't find an equalizer as the clock ran out. The sophomore also launched a team-high six shots, landing four on frame to close out her second season.

The other Pioneer goal was netted by Alanna Fragapane (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), as the orange and blue captain finished out her Utica career in the scoring charts. Frags notched the opening goal of the game, breaking the ice in the 38th minute to help the Pioneers take a 1-0 lead.

Deanna Jackson (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), the Pioneers' lone goal scorer from Saturday's game against Brockport, was also active during the midweek matchup, sending in three shots and seeing one land on frame.

Ryleigh Johnson (Camden, NY/Camden) closed out her junior season in strong fashion, getting another defensive save to finish with seven on the year, good for second in the Empire 8.

Ismiah ChinQuee (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) got the start and saved six shots to close out her sophomore season.
