UTICA, NY - Men's soccer star
Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) just keeps racking up the hardware.
The program's new all-time points, goals, and shots leader has achieved many different accolades this season, including being named an All-Empire 8 First Team selection, United Soccer Coaches All-Region III Second Team selection, three-time Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week, and two-time Pioneer Athlete of the Week - you can now add All-ECAC First Team selection to that illustrious list, with the conference recently announcing Mugushu as one of the best players across the entire east coast.Â
The Syracuse native set or tied eight program records following this past season, including becoming Utica's all-time career points leader (91), career goals leader (37), and career game-winning goals leader (13). Just this past season, Mugushu set new single-season program records in each of those previous three categories, setting new single-season marks in points (39), goals (16), and game-winning goals (6).Â
Mugushu helped lead the Pioneers to a berth in the Empire 8 Semifinals, getting a massive 5-1 victory over St. John Fisher in the first round before coming mere inches from upsetting eventual conference champion Geneseo in an all-time semifinal showdown. Mugushu's impact will be felt long after his graduation, with his mentorship of young attackers like
Carter Cookinham (Poland, NY/Poland) and
Henry Schweitzer (Clinton, NY/Clinton) creating a bright future for the team's offensive capabilities.
