Women's Basketball Splits Season Series with Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY – The Utica University women's basketball team fell in a tightly contested conference matchup against Hartwick College by a score of 54-53 on Friday evening.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was Vanessa Hall (Whitesville, NY/Whitesville Central), who finished with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including a three-pointer, while adding six rebounds and two steals. Natalie Cornell (Greenwood, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) was a force inside, contributing 19 points on a perfect 9-for-9 from the field, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Hayleigh Lagase (Wallingford, CT/Mark T. Sheehan) chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists. McKenzie Simmons (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) added four points and four rebounds but was hampered by foul trouble.

Utica started the game strong, looking to attack the paint and control the boards. Hall was aggressive early, finding her rhythm offensively, while Cornell dominated the interior with her efficiency. The Pioneers took a slim 12-15 deficit into the second quarter after trading baskets with Hartwick.

In the second quarter, Utica's defensive intensity picked up, limiting Hartwick to just 10 points while holding them to 4-of-14 shooting. Cornell continued to be a presence inside, securing key rebounds and scoring efficiently in the post. Hall knocked down a crucial jumper, and the Pioneers entered halftime with a 27-25 lead.

The third quarter saw both teams struggle to find consistent offense, with Utica managing just eight points. Turnovers proved costly as Hartwick capitalized on second-chance opportunities. Hall and Lagase worked to create scoring chances, but the Pioneers found themselves trailing 36-35 heading into the final quarter.

In a dramatic fourth quarter, Utica fought back after falling behind. Hall took charge offensively, driving to the hoop and hitting tough shots to keep the game close. Cornell continued her dominance inside, but the Pioneers struggled to convert from the perimeter. With under a minute remaining, Utica had a chance to take the lead but couldn't capitalize on a late possession. Hartwick secured a defensive rebound and converted free throws in the final seconds to hold on for the narrow 54-53 victory.

Utica (3-18, 1-11 Empire 8) will look to bounce back on Saturday, February 8, as the team faces Russell Sage for senior day. Tip-off from Miga Court inside the Clark Athletic Center is set for 2pm.
