Women's Lacrosse Readies for Plattsburgh State

UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's lacrosse team plays one game this week at home against Plattsburgh State on Wednesday, March 19 at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Utica University women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of 2025 with a 17-14 defeat over the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons on March 8. Grace Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) scored eight goals on 11 shots on goal. She also totaled 14 draw controls and three ground balls. Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) scored four goals on six shots on goal and won four draw controls. Courtney Fish (Albany, NY/Albany) notched two goals on three shots on goal. Other point producers: Alexis Alteri (Clinton, NY/Clinton) (one goal and three assists), Belicia Biette (Troy, NY/Columbia) (one goal and two assists) and Alyssa Specchio (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) (one goal). Makayla Purdy (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) had her best performance in net this season, posting 10 saves in 60 minutes. Utica and Oneonta combined for seven goals in the first quarter, four from Utica and three from Oneonta. Fish scored the opening goal to give Utica an early 1-0 lead only 11 seconds into the game. Grace would score three goals to close out the first frame as Utica entered the second quarter with a 4-3 advantage. Oneonta responded in the second quarter, scoring seven goals compared to the Pioneers' three. Grace opened the quarter with a goal to make it a 5-3 game, but Oneonta would score five unanswered to take an 8-5 lead with 3:55 remaining. Pioneers and Red Dragons scored two goals each to finish off the second as Utica went into halftime with a 10-7 advantage. Utica dominated the second half, outsourcing Oneonta 10 to 4. Grace and Specchio combined for three goals at the end of the third quarter to bring Utica within one entering the fourth (13-12). Biette, Alteri, Fish, Grace and Maria notched one goal each in the fourth quarter as the team took home a 17-14 victory.
 
On a Mission: Grace continues to show why she's one of the most dominant players in the league. She leads Utica with 18 points in four games (16 goals and two assists) and is eight draw controls away from setting the all-time program record set back in 2008 (Casey Pelletier) which is 245. Stuhlman is also fifth in Empire 8 play with 4.50 points per game and fourth in goals with 18. Against Oneonta, she pulled Utica within three goals in the second half and once more late in the fourth quarter, guiding Utica to its first win of  2025. 
 
Everything Else: Utica is sixth in conference play, averaging 10 goals per game and second in the league with a .488 shooting percentage. Maria Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) has 13 ground balls which leads Utica and is sixth in E8 action. Newcomer, Specchio and both Grace and Maria have at least one goal in every game thus far.
 
Between the Pipes: Purdy has started all four games and posts a .368 save percentage and a 15.71 goals against average. In the last two games against New Paltz and Oneonta, she tallied 22 saves. 
 
About The Cardinals: The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in SUNYAC play. Their lone win came against Vermont State Castleton University on Feb 26 (25-11). Maddy Garcia and Leah Klotz lead the team with six goals each. Cynthia Barnosky has a team-leading 16 points (five goals and 11 assists). Lillian Gilroy, a Rome Free Academy product has 42 draw controls which is best on the team. In goal, Anna Myers has a .338 save percentage and a 17.20 goals-against average on 161 shots faced. 
 
Last Time Against Plattsburgh:  The Pioneers and Cardinals have squared off two times, each winning once. Plattsburgh won in 2023 (13-12 OT) and Utica won in 2024 (17-5). Last season, Utica jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and ultimately pulled away with the victory.
