ITHACA, NY - The Utica University men's track and field team completed day one of the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Indoor Championships in Ithaca on Friday, with a variety of invitees competing in a plethora of events.
Â
Hunter Logan (Fort Plain, NY/Herkimer College), fresh off yet another Empire 8 Championship just a week ago, kept up his dominant ways as he took second in a shot-put field of 23 total throwers. Logan launched a throw of 16.83 meters on his second attempt, good for second among the entire field. The Empire 8 champion's throw was much farther than the majority of the competition, with a severe drop off occurring after the third-place thrower as Logan beat the fourth ranked thrower by an entire meter and a half.
Â
The 4x400 team also had a spectacular showing, with the quartet of
Ellis Urgent (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central),
Nolan Flynn (Bethel, CT/Bethel),
Evan Smith (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker), and
Tanner Warren (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) grabbing a seventh-place finish among a field of 17 competing schools. Their final time of 3:20.87 allowed them to notch the top-half finish, also coming in as a season high for the group.
Â
Speaking of Urgent, the outstanding Pioneer athlete took sixth place in the long jump, ranking highly among a total field of 26 jumpers. Urgent achieved a long of 6.87 meters in the event, getting his best distance on his last jump of the day to vault him up to sixth.
Â
In the first round of the 60m hurdles,
Tyshawn Taylor (Syracuse, NY/Institute of Technology) nabbed a personal record with a time of 8.63 seconds, with his dash down the lane setting a new career-high for the Pioneer hurdler. Taylor's time was also good enough to break into the record books, getting him the sixth-best all-time ranking for the 60m in program history. Taylor's 60m hurdle showing was the best of the season so far for Utica.
Â
Competition will start back up Saturday morning at 10:00 am from the A&E Center at Ithaca College.
