AUBURNDALE, FL -
Mike Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero) officially introduced himself to the world of Division III on Sunday afternoon, as the LeMoyne transfer went off for five hits, four RBI, and five runs scored in a doubleheader split against AMCC school Penn State Altoona. The Pioneers fell in game one by an 18-9 score before grabbing a big bounce back victory in a 10-4 win to end off the day.
Â
Rockwell was absolutely everywhere on offense for the Pioneers, making a massive impact in all facets of the game during the day's doubleheader. The Central New York native picked up an outrageous five hits in his seven at bats during the series, recording a .714 batting average during the pair of productive outings. Rockwell also showcased his speed and discipline, adding a stolen base and a walk to his weekend resume. He managed to score five runs over the two-game set, amassing a huge amount of run production. In the game two victory alone, Rockwell tallied three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored, picking the Altoona defense apart with a series of singles. In just four games this season, Rockwell has nine hits, seven RBI, and eight runs scored, all of which are team-highs. He's also posted a .529 average and a .706 over that same time period, a surging start to his Pioneer career.
Â
Rockwell wasn't the only Pioneer who excelled at the plate though, with many others getting involved over the two-game set that saw the team record 19 runs on 17 hits.
Â
Lance Berger (Lindenhurst, NY/Saint Anthony's) and
Eric Schulteisz (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) each grabbed multiple hits during the doubleheader, with each player notching an RBI. Schulteisz was in the lineup for game one, joining Rockwell as the only batters with multiple hits in the first matchup. Berger, on the other hand, did lots of damage in game two, as he tallied a hit, RBI, walk, and two runs scored in the seven-inning series finale.
Â
One of Berger's runs registered as the first score for the Pioneers in game two. They would open the floodgates following that run, as they responded to an early Altoona lead with 10 unanswered runs to take a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Holding the Lions to that single run early on was yesterday's offensive hero,
Ty Montrose (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro). The former Whitesboro great proved his versatility on Sunday, taking the mound just one day after a huge three hit, four RBI performance and spinning a five-inning gem as he held a tough Altoona lineup to just three runs in the game two victory. Montrose grabbed his first collegiate win in game two, striking out four and allowing just four hits against 23 batters faced. In addition to this spectacular start on the mound, the local product also batted in the first game, adding a hit and two RBI to his stat-stuffed Sunday.
Â
Michael Flint (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) also had a great outing in relief of Montrose, piloting the final pair of innings as he allowed just one hit and one run in a solid effort to close out the 10-4 victory.
Â
The game two victory moved the Pioneers' record to 3-2. They'll hit the midway point of their Spring Break slate tomorrow afternoon against RIT. First pitch of tomorrow's game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
