ROCHESTER, NY - The Utica University softball team suffered its first pair of losses to a conference opponent this season, after falling in both games of this afternoon's doubleheader against St. John Fisher. The Pioneers fell in both games by the same score, 5-1.
Game One: Utica, 1 Fisher 5
Leading the Pioneers in game one was Rachel Little (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs), who went 1-3 at the plate and drove in Utica's only run. The Pioneers managed four hits in the contest, with Brooke Beleza (Amherstview, Ontario/Jefferson Community College) doubling and scoring the lone run, while Taylor Kraft (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) and Alyssa Barbato (Rhinebeck, NY/Rhinebeck) each added singles. Utica drew two walks, with Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and Barbato each taking one. Kylie Murray (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) started inside the circle for the Pioneers, pitching her eighth complete game of the season. Murray went all six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eleven hits, walking four and striking out two.
St. John Fisher jumped ahead early, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning on a double. The Cardinals extended their lead with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly, making it 5-0 after three.
Utica broke through in the sixth, as Beleza doubled down the left field line and came around to score on Little's RBI single to center. The Pioneers threatened in the seventh with singles from Kraft and Barbato, but could not push another run across, falling 5-1 in game one.
Game Two: Utica, 1 Fisher, 5
Leading the Pioneers in game two was Abigail Sacks (Colonie, NY/Colonie), who went 2-3 at the plate. The only Pioneer run came off the bat of Rachel Little (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs), who drove in an RBI single to score Brooke Beleza (Amherstview, Ontario/Jefferson Community College) in the top of the first inning. Maggie Habernig (Kingston, NY/Kingston) started inside the circle for the Pioneers, pitching three innings and allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Kelly Thornton (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) came on in relief, tossing the final three innings and giving up one run on two hits while striking out three.
Utica struck first, as Beleza singled and later scored on Little's RBI single to center, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. Fisher responded in the second with a solo home run and an RBI double to take a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals extended their advantage in the third on a two-run double, pushing the score to 4-1.
Both teams cooled off offensively in the middle innings. Fisher added an insurance run in the fifth on a fielder's choice, making it 5-1. The Pioneers threatened in the seventh, with singles from Sacks and Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), but could not bring another run across as Fisher closed out the 5-1 victory
Utica (20-10, 15-5 Empire 8) hosts Keuka College in a doubleheader for the team's regular season finale. First pitch from Greenman Field on Tuesday, April 29 is set for 4pm.
