Volleyball Falls to Union

UTICA, NY - The Utica University volleyball team fell to the Union College Garnet Chargers by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

Leading the Pioneer offense was Trinity Bailey (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) who recorded five kills on the evening, Freshman Arianna Williams (North Chili, NY/Churchvile-Chili) managed five kills, while Lauren Jones (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) nabbed three. Jones was also consistent from the service line, recording a pair of aces. On defense Megan Wright (Clay Center, KS/Clay Center Community) recorded a team high 20 digs, while Jones and Williams each tallied a pair of blocks.

Union would jump out to a 5-3 lead early before the Pioneers would be able to cut the deficit and take the team's first lead of the match at 9-8. Union would be able to take back the lead and expand it to 20-12 before the Pioneers would be able to tally more than one point at a time with kills from Jones and Williams. Union would go on another multi-point run to close out the opening frame by a score of 25-15.

The second set would see the Pioneers fall behind early, with a kill from Bailey cutting the Pioneer deficit to three before the Garnet Chargers would go on a six point run to put Union ahead 13-4. The teams would then trade blows, but it would not be enough for the Pioneers and Union would take the middle frame by a score of 25-11.

The final frame would see the Pioneers able to take an early lead at 4-0 after kills from Williams and Erin Baldock (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches), a lead which Utica would hold on to through the halfway point of the set. A four point run by the Garnet Chargers would give Union the lead, but the Pioneers would come back within one. Another muli-point run by Union would extend the lead, and eventually close out the final frame by a score of 25-20.

Utica (6-5, 0-0 Empire 8) travels to take on the Oswego Invitational on Friday, September 19. Game one against SUNY Canton begins at 2pm from Oswego, NY.
