BRIDGEPORT, CT - Utica University's women's hockey team traveled to the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to complete night two of a two-game road set with first-time opponent Albertus Magnus College. After falling by a score of 2-1 in game one, the Pioneers flipped the same scoreline back on the Falcons, snapping an 11-game winless streak that had been in effect since November 15th. Utica will look to carry momentum into a two-game set with undefeated and #6-ranked Nazareth University next weekend.
The Pioneers netted two unassisted second-period goals to secure the victory.
Kendall Best (Troy, MI/) scored Utica's first to tie the game in the first minutes of the second period, followed by
Kelsey Elliott (Attleboro, MA/) netting the game-winner nearly 10 minutes later. The Pioneers outshot Albertus Magnus 30-16, led by
Maya Jerome (Belleville, MI/) with four, and four players with three.
Isabella Boehm (Framingham, MA/) started her second consecutive game in net, playing the full first period, saving four of five shots.
Alex Venning (Courtice, ON/) entered in relief to start the second period, saving all 11 shots she was tasked with over the final 40:00.
Blayne Dussold scored the lone Falcon goal of the game, breaking the 0-0 tie early into play. Her game-opening goal was assisted on by Alana Laser and Sarah Tatro. Christmas Johnson minded the net for the second straight night, saving 28 of 30 shots that came her way.
The home squad opened the scoring at the Wonderland of Ice, notching a go-ahead goal just 3:16 into play by Dussold. Utica responded with a period-opening goal of their own when Best scored just 1:53 into the second period. 9:38 later, Elliott beat Johnson for the lead-changing, and eventually game-winning, goal.
The Pioneers return to action next week in a home-and-home series with #6-ranked Nazareth University. Game one on Friday, the 30th, will be hosted by Nazareth at the Tim Hortons Iceplex in Rochester, with puck drop at 3:00 pm. The following day, Utica will return to home ice for a rematch, again at 3:00 pm.
