Hughes and Kuznetsov Continue Men's Hockey's Conference Awards Streak

ROCHESTER, NY - The streak continued on Monday for the #10-ranked Pioneers, who, in the midst of a seven-game win streak, picked up their fourth-straight Empire 8 Player of the Week award, along with the UCHC Co-Player of the Week and the UCHC Rookie of the Week to boot. Aidan Hughes (Mississauga, Ontario) and Stepan Kuznetsov (Yaroslavl, Russia) were the recipients of the conference honors, with Hughes capturing the double, getting the Empire 8 Player of the Week and the UCHC Co-Player of the Week. The rookie Kuznetsov achieved the UCHC Rookie of the Week award.

In a weekend that saw the Pioneers score 15 total goals, it was Hughes who managed to light the lamp on the most occasions, as the junior forward racked up three goals and an assist over the two-game span to finish as the team's leading scorer in the series sweep over Albertus Magnus. Hughes scored one goal and procured one apple in Friday's 10-4 explosion before stamping the sweep with the final two goals of Saturday's 5-1 win. He was also extremely efficient, posting a .600 shooting percentage over the pair of contests. His contributions helped the Pioneers remain unbeaten in UCHC play. Hughes is the team's sixth-leading point-getter this season, posting totals of five goals and seven assists during the current campaign.

Right behind Hughes on the Pioneer point chart is the rookie Kuznetsov, who has emerged as the team's seventh-leading point-getter despute playing in only six games since transferring over from Western New England. The freshman phenom continued to be a point-producing machine this past weekend in the Pioneers' sweep over Albertus Magnus. The midseason transfer has continued his epic points streak, using a two-goal and three-assist weekend to move his run to six games. With his five-point weekend, the freshman forward has produced points in every matchup since joining the squad over winter break. In his six games donning the moose, Kuznetsov has five goals and six assists, totalling 11 points in just the past month. The rookie also managed to net one of his goals on the power play, contributing to a Pioneer unit that has been hot on the man-advantage as of late.

These two emerging offensive weapons will look to continue their run this weekend against a St. John Fisher team that will be visiting the Pioneers for the first time ever. The Cardinals, in their first year of existence, will make the voyage to the U this Friday for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Night at the Aud. That game begins at 7:00 PM on Friday. The away matchup is scheduled for the next day, also at 7:00 PM, but over in Rochester at the Rochester Ice Arena.
