HOUGHTON, NY – Women's soccer fell on the road to the Highlanders in a tight conference matchup. An early goal from junior Hope Russell gave Houghton a 1-0 lead, forcing the Pioneers to chase the game. A late push from Utica put the hosts under immense pressure, but the Highlanders held on to secure all three points.
Utica opened the match with a pair of shots, starting on the front foot. Houghton responded with a period of sustained possession, which led to the decisive goal from junior forward Hope Russell. The goal sparked end-to-end action, with both teams registering shots on target. Houghton closed out the first half on top after keeping out a barrage of Pioneer attacks.
The Pioneers took control in the second half, putting six shots on goal. The hosts managed to repel the pressure, delivering a strong defensive performance. The best chance to equalize came in the 82nd minute when Abigail Jalocha (Maspeth, NY/Monsignior McClancy Memorial) rattled a shot off the upright. The Highlanders ultimately saw out the match, leaving the Pioneers disappointed not to come away with at least a point.
