Pioneers Fall to Nazareth in Empire 8 Quarterfinals

Rochester, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team saw its postseason run come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, falling 2-0 to Nazareth in a hard fought battle. The Pioneers put together a quality performance, creating scoring opportunities throughout the match and registering six shots on goal. Despite their chances and strong defensive play, Utica was unable to find a breakthrough in the match. While the result did not fall in their favor, the team's resilience, effort, and commitment were evident throughout the contest. The loss brings Utica's 2026 season to a close, capping off a season marked by determination, growth, and memorable fight on the pitch.

Match Summary
A nervy first half unfolded as a tactical chess match, with both teams patiently exchanging possession and looking for openings.Open play chances were few and far between, but the Pioneers found their best opportunities from set pieces, nearly breaking the deadlock twice from corner kicks late in the half. Defender Kadence Smith (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) came agonizingly close to giving Utica the lead in the 30th minute when she found herself in the middle of a chaotic corner sequence. Her powerful effort looked destined for the back of the net, but a Nazareth defender made a crucial block on the goal line to keep the match scoreless.

Just minutes before halftime, Smith nearly struck again with another set piece. A dangerous corner delivered by senior Mallory Mower (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) caused problems for the goalkeeper and created another opportunity in front of goal, but Smith's difficult attempt sailed just over the crossbar. That chance proved to be the final action of the opening 45 minutes, with the Pioneers heading into the break full of confidence after matching Nazareth step for step and coming inches away from taking the lead.

The Golden Flyers came out with renewed energy in the second half, showcasing the attacking threat that made them one of the conference's most dangerous sides. Nazareth generated six shots on goal after the break, steadily swinging the momentum in its favor. The breakthrough came early in the half when freshman forward Savanna Biehler found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Minutes later, a deadly counter attack forced goalkeeper Emily Duro (Wappinger Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) into a huge one-on-one save to keep out a second goal. Off the back of the great save, Utica searched for a response, but the Nazareth defense proved difficult to break down, limiting the Pioneers' opportunities in the attacking third. Less than 10 minutes after opening the scoring, the Golden Flyers struck again, doubling their lead and securing the win.

In the end, the Pioneers fell short on the scoreboard, though not for a lack of effort, determination, or belief. Their fight throughout the full 90 minutes reflected the resilience that defined their season, as they continued to chase the game until the very end.
