Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Jiovanni Chambers (Ronkonkoma, NY/Holy Trinity Diocese) have been named the Pioneer Athletes of the Week for the week of February 26th. It is each athlete's first career Pioneer honor.
Cary blew away the competition in the shot put thanks to a chuck of 14.19m at the Fast Trax Invitational on Saturday. Her mark was good for #2 all-time in program history, only falling beneath former national-level performer Jane Fahy. The 14.19 was no match for the competition, as the new facility record toss was over 1.20 meters farther than the next closest throw.
Cary and the track team will head up north this weekend, competing at the St. Lawrence Open this Friday, February 20th. The meet is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start time. It will be the team's last chance to tune up before the Empire 8 Championships, which will be the following weekend at Nazareth.Â
Chambers had an emphatic bout during Friday's dual meet win over Elmira. The rookie grappler took care of business in the 184lb showdown, capturing the win with swift precision as he took down Elmira wrestler Cache Littrell, proceeding to work his opponent into a pin following the three-point move. Chambers grabbed the victory in just a minute and 33 seconds, also managing to claim the victory after just a single scoring move. Chambers was able to take advantage of the opposition after a slow start to the bout, quickly ending the affair to add six points to the Pioneers' team score. The squad would seal the Senior Day win by a 48-10 final.
Chambers and the men's wrestling team will be off this weekend, before their season comes to a head at February 28th's NCAA Region 1 Championships. More information about the location and time of that event will be released in the following week.Â
