WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Utica Baseball team played in its fourth RussMatt Central Florida Invitational game today, March 10th, against Dominican University, winning by a score of 15-7. After falling behind 5-0 early, the Pioneers scored 12 unanswered runs in a great offensive showing, taking down a team that had previously had just one loss and had defeated a then-ranked #13 Centre side earlier this season.
Offensively, the Pioneers showed out. Utica had 19 hits on the day in 44 at-bats, this in part due to a mid-game meeting from Coach Milazzo to tell the hitters to make a slight adjustment that worked to perfection. Six Pioneers had multi-hit days, as
Kody Czternastek (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led all hitters with four hits, going 4-6, driving in two, and scoring once.
Mike Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero) also went 4-6 and scored three runs of his own.
Lance Berger (Lindenhurst, NY/Saint Anthony's) went 3-4, driving in four RBIs and scoring two runs.
Matthew Paolucci (Toronto, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) and
Tanner Warren (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) both went 2-5, and
Ryan Smith (Wappingers Falls, NY/Beacon High School) went 2-4.
Starting the game for the Pioneers was
Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional), who, despite starting slow, managed to hold on as the offense picked him up following his exit. He threw the first two innings of play, giving up five earned runs, walking two, and striking out two. He was relieved by freshman
Nathan Pcola (Cassville, NY/Mount Markham High School), who slammed the door shut and stifled the Dominican University rally. The rookie went four innings of two-run ball, giving up six hits but getting clutch outs while the bats went to work.
Ty Montrose (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) finished out the last three innings, carving up the Stars to the tune of five strikeouts and not allowing any more runs.
The Pioneers' record moves to 6-3, and they return to play tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11th, to face the University of Minnesota Morris at 9:15 AM from Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida.
